Today, the PGA of America and Ryder Cup Europe announced that The Ryder Cup Europe as well as The Presidents Cup were rescheduled. They will now be played one-year later than originally planned.
The scheduled 43rd Ryder Cup at Whistling Straits, Kohler, Wisconsin on September 22-27, 2019, has been rescheduled to the week of Sept 21-26, 2021.
The 2021 Presidents Cup originally scheduled for September 30-October 3 at Quail Hollow in Charlotte, North Carolina will now take place September 19-25, 2022.
A Presidents Cup date change also means that the Wells Fargo Championship will now be played at Quail Hollow, 2021, and TPC Potomac, 2022. This is during Presidents Cup year.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention advised that The Ryder Cup be rescheduled. This was done in collaboration with Sheboygan County and the state of Wisconsin. The top priority was the health and well being of all participants.
Seth Waugh, CEO of PGA of America, stated that "Unlike other major sporting events which are played in existing stadiums", he had to decide now to build facilities to host The 2020 Ryder Cup at Whistling Strits.
"It was clear that our medical experts and Wisconsin's public officials could not guarantee that a September event with thousands of spectators would be safe. We knew that rescheduling was the best decision given this uncertainty.
"We are grateful for the flexibility and generosity of Commissioner Jay Monahan, and our partners at PGA TOUR in shifting the global golf calendar.
"Although it is disappointing, we must do everything possible to protect public health. The Ryder Cup is unique because of the support from both American and European spectators. Without them, it was impossible to make it a reality.
"We stand united together with our partners from Ryder Cup Europe and the NBC Sports Group, Sky, and other broadcast partners around world. We are looking forward to delivering The Ryder Cup’s famous pageantry and emotion to a global audience by 2021."
Guy Kinnings, Europe’s Ryder Cup Director said that the Ryder Cup is rightly regarded as one of the most important sporting events in the world. He added: "The Ryder Cup is made unique and completely unique in our sport because of the passionate fans of both sides.
While this is a significant point, it is not as crucial as the health and safety of spectators, which is the most important consideration in these difficult times. All options were considered, including limiting attendance. However, all stakeholders agreed that this would reduce the magic of this wonderful occasion.
"We stand with our partners at PGA of America in the decision not to hold The Ryder Cup for a full year. We also join them in expressing our gratitude to the PGA Tour, for moving the date of The Presidents Cup.
"We also want to thank NBC, Sky, and all our broadcast partners around the world, as well as the worldwide partners of this amazing event, whose support is second to none."
The 2020 Ryder Cup will be played in September 2021. All subsequent Ryder Cups after Whistling Strits will be played in odd years.
The momentum from the 2019 Presidents Cup in Melbourne, Australia has been reaffirmed by the 14th Presidents Cup being played at Quail Hollow Club, in the Southeast United States, in 2022.
Jay Monahan, PGA Tour Commissioner, stated that "these two top international team events are lifted through the spirit of fans." We support The Ryder Cup's decision not to postpone the event for one year due to the uncertain climate. This was to ensure that fans can be part of the amazing atmosphere in Wisconsin. The Presidents Cup delay was also a good decision.
"We are grateful to our global partners, Quail Hollow Club, and all those associated with the Presidents Cup or the Junior Presidents Cup, who have approached this change in a united, positive spirit." The Presidents Cup will be brought to Charlotte in 2022 by the Presidents Cup. We feel confident that the move will allow us more runway.
